Alfred is a professionally educated and trained lawyer, and devotes his professional practice exclusively to alternative dispute resolution, as a judge, arbitrator, mediator and special master. As a judge, he regularly hears cases and issues written opinions for the California Office of Administrative Hearings, both as part of its regular hearings schedule and as part of its Keyhea (State Prisons) program. As an arbitrator and mediator, he is included on approximately 20 local, state, and national panels, and acts as a commissioner for the courts of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. He is Presiding Arbitrator for the Alameda County Bar Association, an is a member of the California State Bar Fee Arbitration committee.
Although he maintains an office in Oakland, and lives in San Francisco, he regularly travels out-of-state to conduct hearings, particularly in Alaska, Hawaii, and Nevada.
His wife, Diane, is a C.P.A. and the finance director for a San Francisco based mortgage data corporation. They enjoy snowboarding, softball, fly fishing, and the occasional marathon. They both maintain memberships with organizations devoted to aiding the emotionally handicapped and economically disadvantaged.
